The 1970’s revival and you: How to make the most of a vintage makeup trend

The 1970's revival and you: How to make the most of a vintage makeup trendIf you’re like us, you’ve heard the news that the ’70s are back – at least when it comes to fashion and makeup. But while vintage styles by their very essence are partly worthy of revival and partly better left where they expired decades ago, we think there’s something to be said about the trends of the ’70s that do deserve an encore (or two).

Think elegant ease and loose, flowy fabrics complemented by fresh, bright-eyed faces. No, we’re not encouraging you to rock the over-tanned, over-plucked and too-blue eyeshadow look, but there’s a way to delicately and demurely pull these ideas off with all the best of today’s makeup technology in mind.

“That fresh-faced ’70s glow is a lovely look you can wear even if you decide against the belly-pinching aspect of high-waisted jeans,” the Kansas City Star advises. “Several beauty items out for spring make achieving this look super-easy, flushing the skin with a sheer wash of color that feels and looks like the ’70s.”

And what, exactly, may this entail?

Face

It’s never a good idea to wear foundation or makeup that’s darker than your natural color, but you can rock the ’70s glow without betraying your complexion. Do apply your regular shade of foundation and concealer, but work in a healthy flush with a bronzer, blush or cheek stain.

To get just the right touch of sun-kissed splendor, apply a multi-toned bronzer (such as the POP Beauty Double Duty Bronzer) to your cheekbones, temples, nose and forehead. The contrasting shades of bronze and pink help balance each other out, and will look oh-so-natural when applied to the parts of your face that the sun highlights.

To really maximize on achieving this balance, add a swirl of rosy blush to the apples of your cheeks and blend into the bronzer.

Of course, it’s equally appropriate to wear blush on its own terms, and in order to achieve that iconic summer-ready glow, light stains and creams are where it’s at this season. These formulas feature a “pretty, vivid pigment but doesn’t look or feel weighty on the skin,” the news source reports. “That makes it perfect for hot, sunny days when a swipe of blush or a berry-kissed pout is all you need to look sexy and made-up.”

Apply a highlighting cream to your cheekbones and browbones to really nab that dewy-faced look.

Eyes

For those who aren’t old enough to remember, the ’70s involved lots of pastel shadows to create darling wide-eyed snow bunny gazes. The downside of this was that many girls looked permanently surprised (how much of that was due to their brows, we can’t say). Just remember: pastel colors are good and fun, but only when they actually serve to complement your coloring.

Choose a light-colored shadow that’s not overly opaque and blend it in softly all over your lid. The aim here is to create a watercolor effect – not something that mimics sidewalk chalk.

You can add some winged liner, but overdoing it will send you straight back to the ’60s. Finish with plenty of black or brown mascara.

Lips

In keeping with the sheer, beach babe beauty that characterized the times, lips should be similarly light and breezy. Apply a sheer lipgloss or balm to keep your pout fresh – a little tint wouldn’t hurt either. ModelCo Lip Lights Ultra Shine Lip Gloss in Indian Summer is just the right embodiment of this sun-kissed style.

The makeup of the Golden Globes: Inside scoop about the best looks

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

The makeup of the Golden Globes: Inside scoop about the best looksThe stars turned out for the 68th annual Golden Globe Awards, and it’s safe to say that the ladies stepped up their game. While there was hardly a makeup misstep among them, there were a few faces that stood above the rest. Luckily, some of the makeup artists who helped create the looks spoke to Allure magazine about the A-list appearances.

Best Supporting Actress nominee Mila Kunis looked so glamorous in a forest green evening gown we could barely recall her days on That ’70s Show.

“Her dress was very My Fair Lady, so we went for Audrey Hepburn with bright ’80s pastels,” Kunis’ makeup artist Tracey Levy told the news source. “I wanted her to look like a teenager – one who was like, ‘Oops, I just fell into this amazing dress and I’m at the Golden Globes.’”

Levy began by preparing Kunis’ face with a light moisturizer, a sheer liquid foundation and a quick dusting of translucent powder. While her coral pout and rose-gold cheeks were flawless, we most adored her sultry stare – Kunis’ eyes were rimmed with dark pencil yet she didn’t opt for an obvious smoky effect.

“I didn’t want to match her eyes to her deep green dress,” Levy told the news outlet, adding that she used coral shadow instead. “Green and coral contrast beautifully – plus, coral complements Mila’s true olive skin tone.”

Michelle Williams, who was nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama, sported fresh-faced makeup that subtly enhanced her gorgeous natural beauty. Like Kunis, it seems that Williams’ skin needed minimal products as well, as makeup artist Jeanine Lobell used little more than a bit of foundation set with pressed powder. Next, she turned her attention toward the actress’ beautiful eyes.

“I always start with the strongest feature of the look first, and then work around that,” Lobell told the news outlet. “Michelle already has what you would call ‘bedroom eyes,’ so to make them look bigger and create more of a lid, I concentrated most of the color in the center of her lid, then used the same color to line her bottom lashes as well.”

For a touch of color, she used a peach-hued blush and a matching lipstick, which was applied with a lip brush for maximum staying power.

Rounding out the night’s best makeup was nominee Julianne Moore, who wowed the crowd in a bright pink number. However, given the gown’s bold hue and the actress’ trademark red locks, selecting the right cosmetics for the night proved difficult.

“[Wearing a dress of] this color can be tricky,” Moore’s makeup artist, Pati Dubroff, told Allure. “If we kept her makeup too bare, she would have disappeared against the dress. But if we added too much color, she would have looked like a clown.”

To sidestep this problem, Dubroff used different shades of pink to create a cohesive yet natural look. On her eyes, Dubroff used a matte taupe eyebrow color on her lids to add definition. She finished with a touch of light pink shimmer and several coats of black mascara on her upper lashes.

For her pout, Dubroff used a rich berry tone to keep Moore from looking too washed out. However, by applying the product with her fingers, the bold lip color didn’t appear too harsh.

“We skipped liner to avoid hard lines,” Dubroff added. “It looked like she had just had a glass of red wine.”

While these actresses may not have taken home any statues, their flawless makeup certainly made them winners in our book.

Build a Purse Sized “Emergency Makeup Kit”… and Save Your Skin!

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011

Night at the ClubLet’s say it’s Friday night. On your way to work your route took you through dusty city streets, punctuated by a breeze wafting dried ‘wino pee dust’ and dog poop into the air. Wait! I could be wrong… it could have been dried ‘dog pee dust’ and wino poop… but let’s not split hairs.

Then, you sat at your desk all day as invisible smog, traveling through office ductwork and air vents, deposited on your skin and after that joined your BFF for dinner and an evening of clubbing.

As you entered and left the club you held your breath to avoid inhaling the haze of the dozen or so smokers who are condemned to puff outside. But the smoke still stuck to your makeup, oil and sweat.

Finally, you met “that guy”! He bought you a few drinks, chatted you up and next thing you know, you’re back at his place. God only knows, you can’t let him see you without makeup in the morning… so you just leave it on. The makeup along with the oil and sweat, pee and poop dust, smog, and cigarette smoke… just where they settled during the long day between your bed and his.

Is that disgusting or what?

Smog and smoke contain plenty of Free Radicals… so every minute of that amorous night you’re destroying collagen, widening your pores and wrinkling your precious skin.

Ask any guy-friend with his sense of smell intact. He’ll confirm that the stuff accumulated on your skin smells… even, stinks.

Ah, romance!

The solution to this dilemma is to carry an emergency skin kit; tiny bottles of your favorite cleanser, night cream and eye serum in a little plastic bag in your purse. Wash your face and apply fresh makeup, if you must. Just do NOT sleep in makeup you’ve worn all day!

How to fake a wintertime glow

Friday, January 21st, 2011

How to fake a wintertime glowWhile many people head for the tanning beds in the wintertime to fake a great glow, there are other ways to make your skin look healthy in the cold weather. With the right products and a bit of expert advice, you can achieve a fantastic winter glow without running to the tanning salon.

Before you apply cosmetics, make sure that your skin is well-conditioned. In the colder months, exfoliating and moisturizing are of the utmost importance – the former will remove flaky skin while the latter will provide hydration to keep dryness to a minimum.

According to InStyle, stars like Glee’s Amber Riley and One Tree Hill’s Sophia Bush use heavier moisturizers in cold weather. Women can also use conditioning products such as GloMinerals Hydrating Bath & Body Oil, which will nourish skin and reduce water loss.

While gals often wear heavier foundation in the winter to hide their pale complexions, a thick coat of concealer can often look unnatural.

“To prevent base from looking cakey, mix it with a few drops of moisturizer,” celebrity makeup artist Leslie Lopez told the publication. “It thins the foundation and gives you an extra boost of moisture.”

Don’t rely on foundation to infuse your face with color – a sheer layer will hide minor flaws, and a few spots of concealer can cover darker imperfections. For a flush of realistic color, use a mix of bronzer, blush and highlighter – using just one product can create a one-dimensional look. However, remember to pay close attention to how you apply the makeup.

“Bronzer looks a lot more natural when it’s concentrated on the contours of the face where the sun would hit: less on the forehead than the nose and cheekbones,” Glamour.com reports. “It also helps to add a little bit of blush…a real tan usually involves slightly rosy cheeks, not just browned skin.”

Of course, it takes a little more than color to make skin look truly radiant. Highlighting cream is a great way to make your complexion glow. Apply the shimmery cream in moderation – a little bit will go a long way. Dab some on the inner corners of your eyes, the tops of your cheekbones and your brow bones.

When selecting bronzers and blushes, there are a seemingly limitless amount of hues to choose from. Look for a bronzer just one or two shades darker than your natural coloring. Finding the perfect blush can be a bit trickier, as the pigment meeds to complement your natural coloring.

To find the hues that best fit with your coloring, Leatrice Eiseman, author of More Alive With Color, told InStyle that women should look toward the skies – colors found in the sunsets, such as terra-cottas and oranges, look best on warm complexions, while hues seen in sunrises, like hot pinks and blues, are better suited for fair skin.

According to the magazine, women can easily determine whether they are a “sunrise” or “sunset” by checking their wrists – blue veins indicate sunrise, while green point to sunset.

While gals often wear long layers in the winter, sometimes you step out in a shorter skirt or sleeveless dress that shows a bit of skin. Though many women regularly use body lotions to look great in cold weather, makeup can also be used on your body to further enhance your skin.

“Apply a mix of foundation and shimmer lotion [like GloMinerals Body Glisten] to you legs,” actress Evan Rachel Wood told the news source. “It makes skin look flawless.”

The best products for a perfect holiday look

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

The best products for a perfect holiday lookWhether you’re getting ready for an office holiday gathering or a New Year’s Eve bash, perfecting party makeup for an end-of-the-year fiesta can be tough. You want to be festive without appearing over-the-top, elegant but not too formal.

While walking the line between holiday cheer and evening chic may seem tricky, it can be easy to master, as long as you armed with the right products and a bit of expert insight.

Glitter is perhaps the biggest component of great holiday makeup – it adds instant flash, while upping your look’s glam factor. Cover your lids with a shadow that is chock full of sparkle, like Too Faced Shimmer Veils, but remember to keep brightly colored pigment below your crease. A bold hue that contains a lot of shimmer can be too much for your entire eye. To create a gorgeous look that sparkles all over, use a glittery nude shadow above your crease and on your brow bone to add flash without overdosing on color.

You can also coat your lips with a shiny lip gloss that boasts a healthy helping of glitter. While some products contain pigment and shimmer, we suggest using a lip stain to add color to your pout and then finishing your smile with a sparkling formula, like Liptini Topper Lip Gloss in On the Rocks (silver glitter) or Spritzer (gold glitter). This way, you can replenish the shimmer throughout the night without worrying about adding too much color.

If you want to wear glittery makeup, remember to choose to emphasize one feature or the other – if you opt for sparkly eyes, a matte mouth or lips that boast a subtle sheen will be the perfect complement, and you won’t look like you are heading to Studio 54.

Glitter can be subtle as well. Too Faced Starry Eyed Liquid Eye Liner will add a small stripe of sparkle and the brand’s Electric Lash Ultra Thickening Mascara and Shimmering Topcoat will cover your lashes with a subtle sprinkling of glitter. If you are interested in a more refined sparkle, add a bit of shine by applying a shimmering highlighter like GloMinerals gloDust 24K, on your cheekbones and brow bones, and a touch in the center of your lower lip.

However, glitter isn’t for everybody – especially if your ensemble is sequined (then your outfit will already boast enough flash without sparkling makeup). Instead of showering your face in shimmer, opt for a pop of color instead. A bold red lip or a smoky cobalt eye will make any evening look come alive for the holiday season.

If you’re wearing a little black dress, you can get away with makeup of almost any hue (as long as it flatters your complexion as well, of course). But if the getup is a bright color, you have two options- select cosmetics that match your outfit or shades that contrast with it. While a bright pink pout will look fantastic with a magenta dress, plum eye shadow is a perfect pairing with a gold number – the choice is yours.

Remember – don’t forget your nails! No look is complete without a perfect manicure, and nail polish is easiest way to add sparkle or color (or both!) to your ensemble. Lippmann Collection offers a range of lacquers that contain a lot of glitter, like Across the Universe (navy polish with blue and green glitter) and Ruby Red Slippers (deep red polish with matching sparkles), as well as metallic formulas that provide a simple sheen, such as Stardust (platinum frost). Pop Beauty Nail Glam is available in a wide range of hues, from Nude (a basic neutral) to Tomato (a classic red) to Turquoise.

How to stay fresh-faced as you travel home for the holidays

Thursday, November 25th, 2010

How to stay fresh-faced as you travel home for the holidaysAs Thanksgiving Day approaches, women everywhere are getting ready to board planes, trains and automobiles to get home for the holidays. Unfortunately, given most ladies’ jam-packed schedules, few may have the chance to freshen up in between arriving at their destinations and attending family gatherings.

However, with a bit of preparation, some savvy packing and a few key products, women can create a great travel revival kit that will enable them to instantly refresh their look before they set foot in their parents’ house.

Before leaving, use a mild exfoliant to remove dead skin and apply a thick layer of moisturizer, skincare expert Denise Spanek told StyleCaster. She also warns that women should avoid using products that contain Retin A or a high percentage of alpha-hydroxy acids, as they can irritate skin when exposed to different climates.

Gals who are flying to their holiday destination of choice may need the most preparation, as the Transportation Security Authority restricts the amount of liquids one can bring on a flight. According to regulations, carry-on luggage can include one quart-sized plastic bag filled with 3.4 ounce bottles of liquid.

Instead of checking your luggage or trying to squeeze 20 bottles into the one bag, only take the necessary products along for the trip. This is a completely personal decision – some women cannot live without their specialty shampoo and conditioner, while others won’t leave home without the products for their personalized skincare regiment. Carefully weigh what you can and cannot do without, and fill a few three-ounce bottles accordingly.

When packing your revival kit, make sure to include items for the three target areas – skin, hair and makeup.

Whether you are traveling on a plane or by bus, the stuffy, recirculated air can leave your skin feeling dry and dull. Make sure to bring a hydrating hand cream and a facial moisturizer. L’Occitane offers treatments that are good for your skin and are packaged small enough to travel with easily, such as Mini Cherry Blossom Hand Cream and Ultra Moisturizing Fluid SPF 20.

While tying your hair back is the easiest way keep strands from looking stringy, women who prefer to wear their locks loose should still bring along some hair elastics, and stock up on dry shampoo.

According to Allure, New York-based hair stylist Moulay Yacoubi suggests that at the beginning of the trip, women separate their hair into three sections – one on each side of your head and one in the back – and make three loose braids. Upon arrival, simply shake out the braids and use a product, such as Clean Original Dry Shampoo, to absorb excess oil. Finish with Clean Shampoo Fresh Hair Fragrance, which will make your locks smell as if you just stepped out of the shower.

Instead of carrying your cosmetics case with you, pack your every day items in your luggage and fill your revival kit with a few multipurpose products. Cream blushes, such as Paula Dorf Cheek Color Cream, can infuse your pout and complexion with color. Pixi Lid & Line combines liner, shadow and a smudger in one easy-to-use (and better yet, easy-to-carry) pen.

While your beauty revival kit will help you to look great when you arrive at your destination, there are a few items you may want to avoid as you travel, to improve your appearance as well.

“Internally, it’s best to stay away from salt, coffee and alcohol – try and drink teas [herbal or green is best] and lots of water,” Spanek told StyleCaster. “Yes, it sounds boring but you will arrive feeling and looking much better.”

Makeup tips for a more youthful appearance

Makeup tips for a more youthful appearanceWhile it can be fun to learn about the hottest trends that are gaining popularity around the world, sometimes practical makeup advice is even better. After all, beauty products are supposed to help you look your best, and sometimes painting your lips the newest shade of fuchsia isn’t as flattering as you might have hoped.

Women who want to look a few years younger may want to stop looking toward the runways and try a few basic techniques that can create a more youthful appearance.

It’s often said that eyes are the window to your soul, so making sure that your peepers look their brightest is an important step when trying to appear younger. But before you stock up on beauty products, you may want to make an appointment with your eye doctor.

“Ninety percent of the time when women in their 30s come in for Botox, I send them to the opthamologist because they need a stronger prescription,” Boston-based dermatologist Ranella Hirsch told Harper’s Bazaar. She added that when women can’t see properly, they squint, deepening frown lines. In addition to visiting the doctor’s office, a high-quality eye treatment, like Babor Sensational Eye Cream, can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while improving elasticity.

There are also a few cosmetic tricks that can help open-up your eyes and make them appear younger. Instead of thick liquid liners, use a soft pencil to emphasize your eyes. Youngblood Intense Kohl Eye Pencil boasts bold pigment but remains soft enough to smudge and blend.

Additionally, don’t neglect your eyebrows, as Harper’s Bazaar reports that full arches are a sign of youth. For a natural look, use a pencil to enhance sparse brows, opting for light, short marks as opposed to filling in the area completely. Look for a pencil with a spool on the end, such as Sothys Eyebrow Enhancing Pencil, as the brush can help smooth out and break up the color to create the appearance of fine brow hairs.

When selecting a lipstick color, opt for lighter shades, makeup artist Matin Maulawizada told the news source, adding that darker hues can be unflattering on more mature women because lips get thinner with age. Ladies should also avoid peach and orange-toned formulas, which can make teeth appear more yellow. Instead, neutral and rosy-colored lipsticks are great alternatives.

If you do have more pronounced lines around your mouth, which is fairly common as skin ages, use a lip primer, like GloMinerals gloLip Filler Pencil, to keep lipstick from bleeding.

While it may seem that all women have different ways of applying blush, ladies looking for a more youthful appearance should brush on color above the apples of their cheeks. According to makeup artist Sandy Linter, applying blush to the highest point of the cheekbone creates an instant lift. Instead of bold hues, opt for a warm tone that blends with your natural skin tone.

Though a sunkissed complexion is often thought of as young and desirable, more mature women may want to stay away from self-tanner, as it can emphasize age spots, Linter told the publication. Instead, she recommends using a warm-colored foundation to perk up pale skin.

To hide blemishes, Maulawizada suggests using camouflage instead of concealer, as camouflage has less oil so it won’t sink into fine lines and wrinkles as easily. Paula Dorf Total Camouflage features two shades of cover-up in one pan, allowing women to create a custom hue that perfectly matches their skin tone.

The two hottest trends from New York Fashion Week: Red-tinted lips and bright, matte lips

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010

The two hottest trends from New York Fashion Week: Red-tinted lips and bright, matte lipsNew York Fashion Week has come to a close, and while many fashionistas are still discussing the various collections that were shown, others in the beauty world are still reeling from the countless makeup looks that premiered on the spring 2011 runways. However, given the overwhelming amount of shows, it can be difficult to sort through the hundreds of looks to select the hottest trends for spring makeup.

Luckily, according to Allure.com, there were a few looks that truly shined, as well as some more outrageous options that truly daring beauty queens may want to dabble in come springtime. “Every season, a few runway beauty looks really blow us away,” the website reports. “Our favorites from New York’s spring 2011 runways [are] complete with coral eye liner, hot pink lips, and a touch of glitter.”

Not surprisingly, there was a huge variety in the eye makeup on display at Fashion Week. From bright yellow lids to very subtle shades, models stalked the runways wearing a range of pigments and shimmers. However, one of the most eye-catching trends may be extremely unexpected – red-hued eye makeup!

“Carolina [Herrara] gave me a picture of flowers,” makeup artist Diane Kendal told the news source, who used lip pencils to created a smoky red eye for Carolina’s collection. While some may shy away from red on their lids, this look contained more brick and copper pigments, creating a sultry-not-sickly stare.

Youngblood Lip Liner Pencil in Brique is reddish-brown with warm undertones, while Colorescience Lip Pencils are available in Red Brick Road, a rich crimson. Pair with a copper or plum-colored shadow to create a sizzling smoky eye.

Red-tinted lids also ruled the runways of Derek Lam and Narciso Rodriguez, and much like Kendal, the beauty teams used cosmetics designed for other areas of the face.

Makeup artist Tom Pecheux used a mixture of coral lipstick and orange lip liner to achieve the bright-eyed look at the Derek Lam show. “[Derek and I] both just loved the color,” Pecheux told the news source of the orange-colored eye makeup. “I’m here to break the rules!”

Women eager to don coral-lined eyes can use a high-pigment lipstick, like Babor Classic Lip Color (which is available in Orange and Coral) and a lip or eyeliner brush to apply a bold streak of color.

At Narciso Rodriguez, beauty expert Dick Page applied a layer of concealer to create an even base and then used rose-colored blush to create a warm yet smoky eye that featured elements of reds, corals and browns. Borghese Blush Milano is available in a variety of warm shades, such as Peach Biscotti and Coral Electrico.

While the eye makeup may have bordered on the extreme, lip color seemed to be a bit more traditional, as bright hues and matte coverage seemed to dominate most models’ pouts.

At Diane von Furstenberg, Allure.com reports that the makeup was inspired by Andy Warhol’s silkscreen prints of the designer. “We wanted to do something simple that would reflect Diane’s image as well as the clothes from the collection,” makeup artist James Kaliardos told the news source. The designer created a lip color he called “orchid-fuchsia.”

The models at Marc by Marc Jacobs wore matte, bright-colored smiles as well, as makeup artist Dick Page painted each pout orange. However, women who are worried that they can’t pull off such a hue may not need to worry.

“When you’re doing a color like this it doesn’t become ‘oh, will it work with my eyes or my skin or my hair,’ it’s an accessory on its own,” Page told the website.

Expert tips to selecting foundation based on your age

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

Expert tips to selecting foundation based on your ageSometimes selecting makeup is simple – you opt for the latest color or the newest formula, or products that complement your eye or hair color. And, when selecting foundation, it is quite common to consider little more than the tone and condition of your complexion, and choose a formula that matches your coloring and hydrates your skin or controls breakouts.

However, experts at InStyle.com suggest that you may also want to take your age into account before selecting your foundation and perfecting your beauty routine.

According to the news source, women in their 20s generally have a good complexion, and should use sheer, oil-free foundation that lets their skin’s natural beauty show.

“After washing and moisturizing your face, dab an oil absorbing primer over your T-zone to cut shine and help your makeup last,” the news outlet recommends. Paula Dorf Perfect Primer for Normal/Oily Skin can be applied under other cosmetics and stops shine from affecting your makeup.

Next, those in their 20s should use a noncomedogenic liquid and apply it with a sponge, as fingers can transfer oil to your skin. In addition to being noncomedogenic, which means that it won’t clog pores, Exuviance Skin Caring Foundations SPF 15 provides long-lasting, eight-hour coverage.

Women in their 30s, however, may want to use products that feature specific benefits, such as wrinkle-softening formulas, and upgrade to a foundation that boasts more coverage. The news provider suggests using a primer that contains silicone, as it will soften the appearance of fine lines. Pixi Brightening Primer includes skin-conditioning silicone and glycerine, which binds water to skin and offers a hydrating and plumping effect.

A combination of formula and translucent powder can help provide fuller, natural-looking coverage. Babor Classic Hydra Light Oil-Free Foundation will hide imperfections and even out skin tone, and Babor Classic Translucent Powder offers a flawless finish as it holds the foundation in place.

By their 40s, women begin to develop more pronounced wrinkles and age spots, InStyle.com reports, and should also be aware that skin will be more prone to a loss of moisture, so a liquid foundation can help combat dryness. However, there are other products that ladies in their 40s should utilize as well.

Age spots and other skin discolorations can be neutralized by using primers that contain color-correcting tints. According to the news source, “green minimizes redness, lavender counteracts ashiness, and peach conceals dark spots.” Both Jane Iredale and Pixi offer kits that contain a number of shades of concealers to cover up spots of different colors.

Look for a foundation that hydrates skin, like Joey New York 4 in 1 Foundation Anti-Aging Formula for Dry Skin, which comes with its own application brush, and carry a small jar of moisturizer with you – treating dry patches throughout the day may keep you looking especially fresh-faced.

Finally, the news outlet recommends that women in their 50s and beyond should use specialized products and, instead of using less makeup, apply foundation in layers to avoid a plastered-on appearance. An anti-aging product, like Cellex-C High-Potency Serum, will reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and make skin look firmer and more toned.

“Subtle shine helps bring out the contours of the face and conceal lines, so look for a featherweight liquid formula with light-diffusing particles,” the news provider recommends. Babor Classic Age Conceal Foundation is an anti-aging formula that boasts light-diffusing pigments that hide lines and wrinkles.

Additionally, ladies 50 and up may want to tote a powder compact for quick touch-ups, but should remember to carefully press it into skin, as wiping will remove already-applied makeup.

Experts suggest the best cosmetics for a speedy morning routine

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

Experts suggest the best cosmetics for a speedy morning routineMany girls can remember watching their mothers “put on their faces” before a day of work or a night out, and this process usually took a considerably long time. But today, it may seem as though the hours mom had to get ready are inexplicably absent from the morning routine, and women everywhere are looking for ways to speed up this process.

Luckily, experts spoke to MSN’s Glo to offer a few time-saving tips for their morning makeup routine. Making sure skin looks impeccable is paramount – with a flawless complexion, you won’t need to spend as much time applying product to the rest of your face.

A bit of concealer can go a long way, according to celebrity makeup artist Troy Surratt. “Dab concealer in the tear trough [where there's darkness or a shadow] and a little on the thin, transparent skin on your eyelids. A little around the nostrils and the chin and you’re set,” he told the news source. Youngblood Ultimate Concealer is a creamy mineral formula that will cover even the darkest inconsistencies.

An all-over foundation, while beneficial at times, can be time-consuming and unnecessary for many women’s daily routines. “A great tinted moisturizer with SPF is a perfect way to save time by skipping foundation, but also a key to prep and protect your face so you stay looking great for years to come,” beauty expert Molly R. Stern told the news outlet.

An oil-free formula, like Jane Iredale Dream Tint SPF 15, is designed to create a barrier between your skin and the sun’s rays as it minimizes the appearance of pores and fine lines.

Adding a touch of warmth to the face can create contrast, and make your teeth and the whites of your eyes appear brighter, Surratt told the news source. Instead of layering blushes and shimmers, opt for a high-quality bronzer, such as Colorescience Bronzer Brush (SPF 20), and apply the product to the parts of your face that the sun would naturally hit – temples, the bridge of your nose, the cheeks and a quick brush across the forehead.

“Curling your lashes gives you an instant eye brightening effect,” Surratt added. Paula Dorf Curl-Up Eyelash Curler gently shapes lashes without pinching or pulling. To set the curl, apply a coat of waterproof mascara. While blondes may benefit from a dark brown formula, which will be more natural looking than basic black, women could wake up tired-looking eyes by using a navy blue mascara.

Instead of using brushes and blending powders, select a cream shadow, which will be easy to apply, and will require nothing more than a swipe of your finger. Just remember to pick-up a long-lasting, crease-proof formula. Too Faced Lockdown Ultimate Creaseless Cream Eye Shadow combines high pigment with an anti-crease cream base. Fair-skinned women may prefer Bondage (a light beige), whereas ladies with a dark complexion can opt for Dramarama (a deep brown).

To finish your look, apply a lip stain. “They give your lips an enhanced appearance that requires very little maintenance or touch-up,” Surratt told the news provider. Lip stains last longer than most other products, so you won’t have to spend extra time throughout the day reapplying your makeup. Instead, cover stained lips with a clear lip balm – it will condition lips and add a subtle, sexy sheen to your pout.

Finally, investing in high-quality products may be the best insider tip to keeping you looking great without slowing you down in the morning. Hairstylist Adrian De Berardinis told the news source that the products you choose can really make a difference, so investing in ones that give you what you need is money well spent.ADNFCR-3538-ID-19919968-ADNFCR
